Are your sinuses causing problems for you? Do you feel congested? Do you have pressure in your head, around your nose and in your forehead and cheeks? Do you have a scratchy throat because you have mucus dripping into your throat? Do you seem to have a cold that never goes away?
If you answered yes to any of these you probably have sinusitis, a sinus infection. You are part of a very large group of sinus problem sufferers. There are close to 40 million people who share your problem. Why is this such a prevalent condition? Why do your sinuses cause problems?
You have sinus cavities in your head. They are basically air filled spaces. Those spaces are lined with mucus. The mucus keeps the membranes moist and pliable. That's a good thing. The mucus lining also acts like fly paper. It traps all of the dust, pollen, bacteria and anything else that may find it's way up there so that it cannot get into your lungs. That is also a good thing.
The mucus that has all that stuff trapped then drains through some very small openings that connect your sinuses to your nose. When these small openings are open everything drains as it should. The system is working perfectly and you feel great. But, these small openings called the OMC (short for ostiomeatal complex) can easily become blocked. When they are blocked, mucus can no longer drain. That is not good.
Your mucus glands in the sinus are still producing mucus, but with nowhere to go things get congested. The sinus cavities begin to fill up. The bacteria that is normally swept away start to multiply. The count quickly goes from the hundreds found in healthy sinuses to the hundreds of thousands. You now have a full fledged infection.
Many different things can cause the blockage. A cold, an allergic reaction, a too dry environment, bacteria, air pollutants and even cigarette smoke. Once there is a blockage you automatically get an infection.
To clear up the infection, two things have to happen. The infection needs to be killed. The blockage needs to be eliminated. That is what the normal treatment consists of when you see your doctor. Antibiotics to kill the infection and decongestants to open the blockage. In the short term that usually works. Unfortunately in a large number of cases, the infection comes back often.
This can be due to modern medicine treating the immediate cause, the blockage and not treating the cause of the blockage itself which could be any one of the factors mentioned above and there are dozens of others.
To get true relief in this case, you have to find out what caused the blockage to form in the first place and fix it. For example, if it was a dry environment that caused the blockage, the place you live needs to be humidified. Otherwise, you will repeat the cycle all over again.
Sinuses cause problems because of the way they are built. It depends on very small openings to stay clear and open. Those openings easily get blocked and when they do get blocked you have sinus problems. You need to find out the conditions or circumstances that caused the blockage to develop. Only then can you begin to solve your sinuses problems.
